Textainer was established in 1979 and is a leader in the marine container leasing industry. Textainer leases standard and special dry freight marine containers to international shipping lines. Textainer also purchases older containers from its shipping line customers and sells these containers along with containers being disposed from its own fleet. In 2003, Textainer was awarded a contract to become the primary supplier of containers to the U.S. Military. Today, Textainer is the largest lessor of marine containers and is among the largest sellers of second hand containers in the world.

A network of 14 regional and area offices form the backbone of Textainer's leasing, resale, and operations efforts. Textainer maintains four regional offices: 1) Americas Region in Hackensack, NJ responsible for North and South America; 2) European Region in London responsible for Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Africa; 3) North Asia Region in Yokohama responsible for Japan, Korea, and Taiwan; and 4) South Asia Region in Singapore responsible for Southeast Asia, China, and Australia.

At the end of September 2007, Textainer's owned and managed container fleet was comprised of 2.1 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEU) with a current replacement cost of over $3.9 billion.
