Global Cause
Zululand Conservation Trust
Textainer is proud to be associated with and to provide support to a Conservation and Community initiative based in Zululand, South Africa. This trust the “Zululand Conservation Trust” carries out incredibly important conservation work and has amazing successes with:
- Rhino Conservation and Protection (where surplus rhino are distributed into the greater rhino meta-population)
- Orphaned rhino are cared for raised and released back into the wild
- Cheetah Expansion Programs
- Painted Wolf Projects where this most endangered predator is given the chance to thrive and breed
- Pangolin re-introductions where pangolins captured from ‘animal traffickers’ are nurtured back to health and then released in safe protected areas
Our mission at the Zululand Conservation Trust is a commitment to the conservation of endangered species whilst maintaining and supporting partnerships with neighboring communities. The Trust was established in 2011 to achieve a common dream between a group of devoted wildlife enthusiasts. Based in northern Zululand, we recognize the fundamental need to involve, empower, educate and support local communities, in order to achieve effective and lasting conservation. We aim to target regional conservation and community projects, in order to facilitate a far-reaching impact throughout the greater Zululand region. We fund our wide variety of projects through generous donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, as well as our own fundraising events.
All of our funding is focused towards our two main types of projects:
- Community upliftment, with a keen focus on the betterment and empowerment of previously disadvantaged black communities, in adherence with the B-BBEE initiative.
- Conservation of endangered species, specifically wild dog, black rhino and white rhino. Our conservation projects include our newly-established Zululand Rhino Orphanage

Local Causes: We highly encourage our employees to be active in their local community. Please see look at a few of the examples below.
- SF office volunteers yearly to the Glide Foundation in downtown SF
- An employee from our London office volunteers with a local homeless charity
- An employee from the San Francisco office volunteers with the Breakthrough supports young people on the path to college
- An employee from the San Francisco office volunteers with Ascend Leadership – Ascend is the largest, non-profit Pan-Asian organization for business professionals in North America.
Environmental
Minimise our Environmental Impact and Touch the Earth Lightly
Textainer is currently undertaking initiatives to help the container industry to reduce its carbon imprint on the world.
- Water Based Paints: We recently supported the change from solvent based to water based paints for the container industry, leading to a massive reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds “VOC” emissions.
- Bamboo Flooring: As part of our business practice over the past years, we have been switching to bamboo flooring instead of tropical hardwood plywood. Bamboo flooring is issued from certified plantation and is kinder to the environment.
- Reefer High Energy Savings: We are acquiring the newest generation of refrigerated containers that minimize energy usage, thus reducing CO2 emissions and contributing to the prevention of global warming.
- Increased Usage of Monitoring: We support our customers in adopting newly developed Reefer Monitoring Units to better control their cold chain. These IoT solutions enable them to transport properly cooled food and pharmaceuticals, eliminating spoilage and rejected loads.

Saving Endangered Spaces for Endangered Species
The Zululand Conservation Trust is committed to bridging the skill and poverty gap between these outlying African communities and society at large through our ongoing community projects. By working alongside our local communities we strive to uplift, educate and empower, through poverty relief, crèche building and support, assistance to local schools, Food Security Projects and through supporting communities with their basic necessities.
But ultimately, we also wish to form a relationship with these communities and share our love for conservation with them. After all, these are the conservationists of the future.
